About Skip Atkins

An enthusiastic amateur photographer dating back many decades to my days in the college darkroom, I became fascinated by the late-twentieth century evolution of digital photography, as it emerged from its “toy-camera” origins and became the state of the art. For one thing, this meant that there was no longer a need to suffer eye strain by squinting in red light, and my hands didn’t have to plunge into unpleasant liquids anymore!

Beyond this, I enjoy the greater creative control over the entire process of producing a photographic image, from capture to processing to printing, that digital techniques afford. Having recently retired from my long-standing "day" job as an anesthesiologist in the greater Philadelphia area, I hope to enjoy the photography opportunities that the additional free time may afford me.

Most of my photographs are taken in Philadelphia, its suburbs, and other sites around the Delaware Valley and mid-Atlantic region. My work has been exhibited in various venues in my local area, and it has won four awards at an annual juried show. I have also been a featured photographer at a gallery in my community.

I make no pretense regarding my status as an amateur photo-hobbyist. It’s just an activity I thoroughly enjoy, despite the inevitable frustrations in not being able to “get the shot right.” I’m always trying to learn from the many people I know, and those I don’t, with a lot more knowledge of the art of photography than I possess, and of them I am most appreciative.
